“Protect Your Child on the Internet; Avoid Lawsuits, Pedophiles and More…”
Dear Parent:
If your child has touched a computer, then this will be the most important letter you've ever read. Don’t make the same mistakes I made, or you’ll be a victim too.
I have a daughter, but it wouldn’t have mattered if I had a son. She uses the computer, and I haven’t taught her a thing. You’d think she is a computer genius the way she works that thing.
She taught herself and now she’s on the computer every day.
Oh yeah...She’s 12.
I frequently wondered what she was doing on the computer for so long so I decided to look through the computer while she was at school. I was blown away. I found a lot of stuff that I didn’t want to find.
It looked like my daughter was stealing and being seduced by pedophiles.
How could I have missed this, I shouldn’t have missed this.
What I mean is, I have a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, and I’ve worked as a Computer Forensic Investigator for 3 years. I look through criminal’s computers every day. Now the criminal’s computer is my family computer.
They never taught me how to be a cyber parent in college.
After calming down, I decided to look through the computer more so I’d know exactly what actions I needed to take. I kept digging and I found hundreds of music files (songs) that she downloaded to put on her iPod. She was downloading them for FREE using some program that she installed. Every song on the computer was illegal. I had read stories about parents getting sued because their child illegally downloaded music and I didn’t want to be the next story, lawsuit, and $10,000 settlement.
My fear pushed me further, I kept digging and I found e-mails from some guy in Georgia. This guy had been asking my daughter for her address so he could come and visit her. Some Pedophile was hunting my child.
I threw the mouse across the desk, leaned back in the chair, and stared at the computer screen.
I was afraid.
I knew my daughter spent too much time on the computer, but I had no idea what she was doing.
I wondered how many other parents were in the same position as me.
- How many parents don’t even know that they are a victim?
- How many parents will be a victim because they don’t know how to protect their child online?
Let’s face it; the computer is a vital part of life. I couldn’t just take it away. But I had to do something...
Out of anger, I deleted every song on the computer. I uninstalled the programs she used to download the songs. I put a password on the computer and I waited for her to come home from school.
I was a wreck. I didn’t know what to say or how to say it so I just did the best I could. I sat her down and had a very long talk.
Since that talk, my daughter and I have grown together. The computer problems have diminished because I’ve spent every night learning how to protect her online.
During my voyage, I’ve done over 1127 hours of research and I’ve interviewed investigators that specialize in protecting children online. I’ve stockpiled every drop of information I could find. After a little more than 8 months of collecting, testing, and using the information, I found myself in a completely different position.
My daughter was completely responsible on the computer. I could leave her alone -- at home -- and not even worry about what she was doing on the internet.
I talked about my experience with some of my friend’s (Other parents) and I found that they were having tons of problems with their children too.
I spent a few weekends and organized all of the information that I had and I gave out 5 copies to my friends. 4 of them used it and I answered a lot of questions and even learned more from their experiences.
My friend Jana had the best experience. Her son was spening all night using the Instant Messenger and she didn’t know how to help him. After using the information I gave her, she has learned about instant messaging and her son is only using it in moderation now. Jana kept telling me that I should sell the information; she told me that every parent needs this stuff.
It needed some organizing and a few updates, but after that I was ready to make it available. I worked with a few teachers and the end product was a complete breakthrough in cyber parenting.
The KidCareKit was created.
I didn’t want the KidCareKit to be some nationally advertised product. I wanted it to be affordable. I wanted it to be simple to use and easy to understand.
Some of my friends tried the computer classes at the vocational school for $300 but the classes just didn’t provide the information that parents need.
Some of my friends also tried looking up information online and quickly found themselves lost.
You will never be lost again. I’ve done all of the hard work for you. I’m eager to make sure the KidCareKit helps you, your child, and your childs school, so I’ve made the entire KidCareKit exclusively available through your child's Parent Teacher Organization. Proceeds from every KidCareKit are going to help fund your child’s Parent Teacher Organization and you’ll be armed with the tools you need to protect your child on the internet.
Here’s the point of my story. You deserve the chance to benefit from everything I’ve learned.
